Superior Signal Smoke Candles for Sewer Test
Using Superior
Signal Smoke Candles for sewer testing is a convenient, cost-effective means of increasing efficiency of municipal sanitary sewer systems and treatment plants. Particularly useful are the 3C Superior Signal Smoke Candles that burn for approximately three minutes and produce a generous 40,000 cubic feet of dense white smoke that is non-toxic and non-staining. One or more smoke candles
are lit and placed near the intake side of a fan or blower designed
specifically for pressure-ventilating a section of sewer system through an open manhole.
Smoke from 3C
Superior Signal Smoke Candles persists for up to 15 minutes, affording plenty of time for spotting crews to visually locate smoke escaping from roof leaders, area drains, leaky manholes or cross-connected storm drains.
Smoke Candles offer an efficient and cost effective sewer-testing tool for locating cross-connections between storm water systems and sanitary sewer systems. Blowing a low pressure,
non-toxic, non-staining, smoke candle smoke into the sanitary sewer system pushes the smoke into all sanitary pipes connected to the main, and then through any connections to storm water systems. Smoke released to the air clearly identifies sources of inflow and infiltration (I&I).
Typical sources of sewer leaks causing inflow and infiltration:
- Catch basins connected to the
sanitary sewer
- Below grade sewer clean-outs
- Cross connected roof leaders
and drain tiles
- Cross-connected sump pumps
- Detention pond overflows
- Leaky manhole chimneys and
frames
Using Superior Signal Smoke
Candles for sewer tests is economical.
Testing with smoke candles; along with sewer flow monitoring, CCTV and
manhole inspections enables municipalities to prioritize rehabilitation efforts and budgets. Dramatic decreases to I&I can be achieved quickly and definitively by using high-volume smoke candles to test for sources of storm water inflow and infiltration. Best results are achieved when smoke tests are performed in the spring and summer when ground water levels are low, and on days with no rain and little wind.
Advantages of Superior Smoke Candles for Sewer Tests
- Each candles burns for a specific time and generates a standardized volume

- Increase smoke volume by burning multiple candles at once
- No messy liquid to spill or drip
- No special training required for use
- Protected by 12-month
warranty if stored in cool, dry location
What is I&I (Inflow and Infiltration)?
I&I refers
to storm water or groundwater flowing into a sanitary sewer system through cracked pipes, leaky manholes or cross-connected storm drains, down spouts and sump pumps. Such clean-water influxes increase the volume flowing to sanitary sewer systems and treatment plants,
leading to potential overflow events and higher effluent treatment costs. Most inflow comes from storm water. Most infiltration comes from groundwater.
Inflow occurs when rainwater finds its way into the sanitary sewer system instead of storm sewers.
Examples include: roof leaders, yard and area drains, manhole covers, and cross connections from storm drains. The remedy for inflow is removing these improper connections to the sanitary sewer system.
Infiltration refers to ground water seepage into the sanitary sewer system through cracks or leaks in sewer pipes. The cracks or leaks may be caused by age related deterioration, loose joints or root infiltration. The solution to infiltration is repairing or replacing the leaking infrastructure.
